Longboarding LA to NYC

Some of you may have noticed that we have been sharing a few posts from a page 'Longboarding L.A to NYC - Film' across Facebook and Twitter.

These guys are riding across the USA from LA to NYC. They've set themselves a target for the adventure:

"We want to create a film to inspire other young people to get out there and be motivated to create their own opportunities, rather than simply rely on a good education. Our film 'Skating L.A to NY' is a feature length documentary film following three teenage boys as they skate on longboards 3000 miles from L.A to NY in under 60 days."

Here at Mindless we're always fans of LDP (Long Distance Pushing) and doing what you love.
Rupert came to us full of passion and a portfolio of videos that he had produced, so it was clear to us that he meant business.

So here we are, the gang have been supported with product, and in return we get an awesome adventure to follow with great media!

A whole bunch of training is in store before the main trip. To start, they visited Wales for a long weekend, Rupert had this to say after they finished:

"So we made it! Late on Thursday night we arrived in Broad haven on the coast, 250 miles away from Rhyl after 5 tough days of skating. We would like to thank The Teenage Cancer Trust, Alibi Drink, and Mindless Longboards for their support we wouldnt have made it without them. We can't wait for all of you to see the film we are putting together about our adventure!"

Mindless Talisman Trucks vs Standard Longboard Trucks

The Mindless Talisman, our premium longboard truck, from a distance looks like any other truck but, if you take a closer look, you will see that it's very different from the rest!

Firstly, this truck was fully designed in-house. Many hours, and days, and weeks and months were spent getting it designed, tested, redesigned and retested, until this beautiful model was born!

Up close you can see that it looks different already. The Mindless branding is embossed into the metalwork, along with the wings shape and Talisman script.

It's not just the cosmetics that make it different though. The Talisman trucks have a great spec that separates them from standard trucks.

We will use our standard truck, that can be found on the classic boards, as an example here. Those trucks are great performers and have been very reliable for us. We rate them highly, which is why we use them so much in our longboard range but of course the Talisman is our premium model, however, and has a lot more of a custom spec underneath all that beauty.

Better quality Aluminium and casting techniques, have allowed us to make it lighter yet stronger and, as well as the improved grade of aluminium, the metal is completely heat treated to T6 for increased strength.

The 
PU Pivot cups reduce truck slop
 and our custom skull ball pivot and eye shape kingpin hole allow the truck unrestricted turning
.

The double barrel cushions give better rebound and turning control while the long kingpin allows the truck to take other sizes of bushings.

The Talisman has a fixed kingpin which makes maintenance and adjustments a lot easier, and the flat top washer allows the bushing to flex and move more (helps rebound/control/feel).

So that's a bit more information to help you see why the Talisman trucks are so special to us, and what makes them stand out from the rest.

Mindless Longboards | The Crackling review - James Allen

Our man James Allen was at The Crackling this weekend. He sent over this writeup:

"The Crackling was a great weekend. We arrived Saturday afternoon with high hopes for the weather to stay nice, as the track was drying and there was little to no rain in sight. So straight away I picked a spot to park my stuff, and joined the queue of other eager skaters ready to sign up, pay up, pad up and skate. 

After setting up my board and getting ready, I went for a few freeride runs to familiarise myself with the smooth but grippy terrain we were to be skating for the weekend. I had a couple of good warm up runs, skating with a few familiar faces, and meeting new ones, which is the good thing about these events, meeting people and and skating with pals. But just as everyone had warmed up and was having fun, Hog Hill lived up to its reputation and it started to hail/rain, and didn't stop for at least 2 hours, leaving most people sat inside chatting and eating. A few others embraced the weather and skated the hill anyway, making the most of their time at the hill. 

As the day drew to a close, people packed their things and readied themselves for the campsite and the night ahead. I however had the luxury of staying with a couple of pals in a fantastic "Motorcottage" which included a comfortable and dry bed, and a cooked meal to end the day right.

The next morning we woke early to get ourselves up to the hill, ready to set ourselves up for a full day of skating, with full confidence in the weatherman telling us we had a full day of sunshine.

The day started with freeriding, letting those who had signed up to race, practice a few more runs before the racing commenced. Meanwhile, the slalom enthusiasts were setting up and doing their thing but the majority of the action was concentrated on the GS hill where the Slide Jam was being held.

All the skaters, myself included, crowded around Jorge as he bellowed his rules through the megaphone, and generally getting us all stoked, laughing and ready to have fun. As the Jam went on, I noticed the skill of some of the guys was incredible, not only making it tough for everyone up against them, but also for the judges to pick the winners. I felt privileged to be chosen among the 10 finalists, and as we each took our final runs, the crowds cheered and the judges picked their five favourite guys, and they deserved it with such awesome skating. Well done dudes! 

After having such a great time on the slide hill, more fun was to be had elsewhere, as we swapped our slide wheels for something with a bit more grip, some headed over to the slalom cones and some to the race hill where the racing was about to begin. I was feeling nervous, since it was my first race, so I drank a whole can of Red Bull right before my heat, which probably wasn't a good idea, but I thought it would help with the nerves. A number of races had gone by, and I was feeling good and ready for my next heat, having done better than I'd expected in my previous two. We lined up, and on go we pushed, and it was a good start for me as I was toward the front of the pack, but as soon as we hit the chicane, another racer and I collided sending us both flying off our boards and then those knocking off the other skaters, leaving just the leader of the pack headed for an easy win. We all got up to race for the finishing line, except the guy I had collided with as he had an injury and unfortunately couldn't finish. Get well soon buddy!

The races carried on for the rest of the afternoon, with minimal injuries thankfully, but lots more fun as the racing dwindled down to the finals with a fast and intense last race to please everybody.

The end of the day consisted of the crazy Mini Moto races, which unfortunately I missed because I forgot to sign up, and then everybody's favourite part, the PRIZES!! Which included lots of scrambling of goodies and the rewards for the winners of the day. These included prizes from Mindless Longboards, Newton's Shred, Octane Sport and so many others.

All in all it was an amazing weekend for everyone.

Cayuga Complete Review

If you can't read French and finding the translations are a little bit confusing, here are the key points:

 ‘le concave du plateau me saute immédiatement aux yeux. Il est incroyablement travaillé sans être exagéré’ – The concave deck immediately catches the eye. It is incredibly elaborate without being over the top.

‘Les extrémités de la planche sont… "aplaties" pour limiter des dégâts lors des chocs frontaux’ – The ends of the deck are flattened to limit damage from frontal impact.

‘La déco… est bien réalisée. Elle est même assortie aux 3 plis de bois teintés du sandwich ... Le total look !’ – The look is well done. It is even accompanied by 3 stained wood plies in a sandwich construction… The complete look!’

‘Les Talismans sont des trucks… bien conçus, légers, avec une finition "brute" mais soignée’ – The Talisman trucks are well-designed, light, and with a ‘raw’ but tidy finish.

‘Le pivot-cup est plutôt souple et ajusté ; loin de l'affreux plastique dur de certains trucks’ – The pivot cup is flexible and adjustable; far from the awful plastic of some trucks.

‘L'ensemble est très bas, facile à pousser et freiner’ All together, it’s very low, easy to push and brake.

‘la board roule bien et reste confortable même sur revêtement moyen’ the board rides well and remains comfortable even on a surface that’s not so great.

'Un plateau robuste et bien fini. Confortable, polyvalent et intelligemment pensé… Le plateau de la MINDLESS Cayuga est au moins à hauteur de certains grands noms du marché (Landyachtz, Sector9, Bustin, Comet, etc ) Si si je vous assure ! ;) – A robust and well-finished board. Comfortable, versatile and intelligently designed… this Mindless Cayuga board is well up to the other big names in the market (Landyachtz, Sector9, Bustin, Comet, etc.). Yes, yes, I assure you!

‘(les trucks) ils détrônent dans mon cœur, les trucks Paris dans le classement des trucks les plus joueurs, turny, agréables à rider en ballade, carving, slide.’ In my heart, I think that (the trucks) are better than the Paris trucks, due to their performance, turning and ease of riding when dancing, carving and sliding.
